We have all bought games where we realized they were just bad, not your type, or below your standards but you kept playing anyway. What are your reasons?
I'm sure a huge majority keep playing because they want to find reasons to like it in the end. I'm that way too, really. But I look more into the characters to find my reason for completing the game. Once I find a REALLY good/interesting character that I may happen to relate to or find some kind of connection with, I feel obligated to continue. This happens for me with really good games fairly often, but I'm happy I can find some in games I don't care for. A good example would be Kaldea from The Bouncer. The game is pretty awful, but I finished it for her. Also, I enjoyed Fang to a certain extent for me to finish FFXIII.
In a rare instance, I had to finish Oblivion for the music. :/
What keeps you playing subpar games?

Same thing for me. It would have to be for a character that I finish the game. Usually what makes a subpar game for me is bad story or game play mechanics. So really the only reason I would finish a game at that point would be for a character. But sometimes for me that just isn't enough and I drop the game all together.
Although for FFX I was able to finish it because the battle system was pretty fun to play with. Other than that and the fact that Heather wanted me to finish it, I probably would have just dropped it.

I honestly would not have blamed you for dropping that game JRRD. The story was pretty shitty and over half of the cast was annoying as hell.
Usually if I find one little thing I like about a game, most of the time I'll go ahead and play it till completion. The said 'thing' can range from liking how the controls feel to how hilariously bad I find the story. It takes a lot of negatives to make me drop a game completely but it does happen occasionally. That being said, I'm not one of those people that will go out of my way to find something to like just to justify a purchase. If I sincerely don't like a game, I'll drop it like a ton of bricks, even if I paid $60+ for it (ex: Xenosaga).

I actually had FFX for an example in my post but I deleted it.
Lulu and Auron got me through that game.

If it's from a series I like, I'll do it either because I'm hoping it's going to get better, or just to see the story through. Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble and Star Fox Command come to mind.
With Rayman 2, I just did it because I was stubborn. I channeled my hate into energy to play the game, purely out of spite. Strange phenomenon.
I played Dragon Warrior (which I'm sure was great for its time yada yada) but I pretty much just used it as something to keep my hands and eyes busy while I caught up on podcasts.
I played Mother out of love for the rest of the series and a desire to see its beginnings. I actually liked the story, though.
Even though the gameplay is repetitive garbage in Deadly Premonition, I love other things about it enough that I genuinely enjoy the experience as a whole.
Killer7 has mediocre gameplay but it's still an amazing experience.
So...I guess normally I'll go into some games with the knowledge that, though the core game isn't so hot, there's some sort of thematic aspect that will make up for it to me. I have a pretty good nose for that. And in the end, I do consider those to be good games.
